In the wake of the tragic death of Hartsville High School football player Ronald Rouse this past Friday night, Crestwood High School in Sumter has agreed to concede defeat, the school said.

The death of Rouse, which was reported by Patch this past weekend and has since become a national story, deeply affected not only the player's school and the Pee Dee community of Hartsville, it also had a profound effect on Crestwood. In a statement Monday, Hartsville High's principal lauded Crestwood High for its decision.

"This is a first-class and compassionate decision on the part of Crestwood High School and we greatly appreciate their consideration," said Hartsville Principal Charlie Burry. "Their coaching staff, players and administration have been very supportive and kind during these difficult times."

The second half of the game, which Hartsville led 27-7, was called off after Rouse, a 6' 3,'' 320-pound lineman, collapsed and later died.

A Darlington County coroner's report ruled that Rouse, who was born with an enlarged heart, died as a result of an irregular heartbeat. During the game, Rouse collapsed once on the field and again on the sidelines. Coaches and medical personnel gave him CPR and shocked him with a defibrilator before he was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
