If your child is tired of the typical summer camp experience, perhaps it's time to kick it up a notch.

Registration for the Mauldin Police Department's Police Youth Academy begins today. The military-style camp for both boys and girls ages 11-14 gives cadets a real taste of what it takes to become a law enforcement officer.

Cadets will participate in physical training each day of the three-week camp. Additionally, each division of the police department will provide instruction and equipment demonstrations as part of the experience. This includes the department's K-9 program, Tactical Warrant Team, Traffic Enforcement, Detective Division, and the Dispatch Center.

The cadets will have an opportunity to learn crime scene investigative techniques, and have a chance to work their own crime scenes, according to Police Chief Bryan Turner.

Additionally, cadets will spend a few days with Mauldin firefighters to learn CPR, physical agility standards, and first-aid skills, Turner said. Cadets will be required to keep a journal of their daily activities and experiences. Turner also said cadets will take several field trips as well.

The academy is free, and includes uniforms, supplies and meals. But space is limited.

Registration runs through May 1. Applications can be picked up at the Police Department, through your child's School Resource Officer, or downloaded from your child's school's website. Or, click here for an application and more details, plus contact numbers to gather more information.
