Whew! That was close....

Amid the fanfare of DeAndre "Nuk" Hopkins being taken in the NFL Draft's first round, USC star running back Marcus Lattimore's being taken by the San Francisco 49er's, not to mention other draftees from state schools, Gamecock's tight end Justice Cunningham earned his own distinguished place in draft history on Saturday.

Cunningham earned the dubious honor of being the very last player chosen in the draft — earning the status of "Mr. Irrelevant."

Cunningham was the final pick in the final round, being taken 254th by the Indianapolis Colts.

Mr. Irrelevant's don't have a great track record for prolonged or outstanding NFL careers, or any careers at all for that matter.

However, Cunningham should take solace in knowing that the only other Gamecock to earn the distinction — kicker Ryan Succop — is enjoying a successful career as a starter with the Kansas City Chiefs, who took him as the draft's last pick in 2009.

Succop signed a five-year, $14 million contract in 2012.
