A worker at an Upstate group home has been charged after the death of a pedestrian in his care.

Roderick Carlton Grove, 55, of Mauldin has been charged by Mauldin Police with neglect of a vulnerable adult resulting in death, said Mauldin Police Det. Benjamin Ford.

Grove was the caretaker of 25-year-old Jamie Rosemond, who lived in a South Carolina Mentor Group Home. On Monday evening, police responded to Ashmore Bridge Road in Mauldin, where Rosemond was found dead after being struck as he walked along the roadway.

A police investigation determined that as Rosemond's caretaker, Grove allegedly failed to visually confirm Rosemond's location in the residence, and also falsified documentation of Rosemond's whereabouts, Ford said. Such care in monitoring Rosemond, who was a special-needs patient, was required because of the victim's status as a level-3 member of the group home.

"Roderick Grove falsified documents and failed to properly care for Jamie Rosemond, thus resulting in Mr. Rosemond’s death," Ford said.

After he was allegedly allowed to wander offsite, Rosemond's death took place about 1.5 miles from the group home, which is located at 514 Flanders Road. Ford said Rosemond died at the scene after being hit by "multiple vehicles."

Grove remained in the Greenville County Detention Center Wednesday night on a $20,000 bond.
