The Greenville County Council member whose district encompasses the Taylors area, will now lead council as chairman.

Bob Taylor, 73, was elected chairman of county council on Tuesday, The Greenville News Reports.

Taylor was first elected to council in 2000, and will succeed Butch Kirven as chairman. Kirven had been chairman since 2005.

Taylor successfully fought off Jenn Webb's spirited campaign for the District 22 seat last summer to remain on council and received the endorsement of U.S. Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-4).

Taylor was elected by an 8-4 margin after Councilman Willis Meadows pulled his name out of consideration before the meeting. Meadows was named vice-chairman.

“I look forward to serving the people of Greenville County,” said Dr. Taylor. “Our council will begin to address special issues by getting the right people involved to take advantage of the talents and passions of our council members.”

Taylor is a retired educator who was the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Bob Jones University.

Taylor's first order of business was stating his interest in creating special ad hoc committees to address council's goals.

“I look forward to serving the people of Greenville County,” said Dr. Taylor. “Our council will begin to address special issues by getting the right people involved to take advantage of the talents and passions of our council members.”
