Even by South Carolina’s standards, last week was a busy one in Palmetto State politics. On Wednesday, Gov. Nikki Haley gave her third State of the State Address and on Friday, as just about everyone knows by now, Elizabeth Colbert-Busch—sister to comedian Stephen Colbert—confirmed she’ll be entering the race for the SC1 Congressional seat.
Here’s a sampling of what the many political blogs in South Carolina are talking about:
- Can I Get a Word In is based in the Upstate and, like a lot of folks, has been talking a lot about gun control recently.
- Earl Capps is one of the most influential bloggers in the state and he has a look at some of the parody Twitter accounts in the SC1 race as well as potential corruption in Abbeville County.
- The Cotton Boll Conspiracy is talking about a prospector who found an 11-pound piece of gold. It’s worth $300,000. He found it in Australia so no need to start checking the garage for a shovel just yet.
- Will Folks, the former Mark Sanford staffer who runs FITSNews, takes issue with the way South Carolinians are portrayed on a new sitcom. Consider yourself warned, FITSNews is not always family friendly.
- Waldo Lydecker shares The New Yorker’s look at Fox News’ decision to modify its programming schedule in the coming days.

- Lance Armstrong has taken a lot of heat lately. Patrick K. Phillips worries that the charity he helped found may suffer for it.
- A fairly new face on the SC blog scene is PoliStew. It’s left-leaning and based in Spartanburg. Amy Lazenby, its author, is hoping Ashley Judd will be the next celebrity to enter politics. Lazenby also explains why she’s embarrassed by State Senator Lee Bright.
- Jamie Sanderson notes that although the “Fiscal Cliff” was avoided, a lot of kids could be hurt if Congress doesn’t get its act together. Check out one of Jamie’s four (yes, four) Twitter feeds while you’re visiting.
- If there is a “voice” for the Tea Party in South Carolina it belongs to Karen Martin. She runs the Spartanburg Tea Party and regardless of affiliation it’s a must-read for anyone interested in South Carolina politics. What sets it apart is that Martin doesn’t just use her space to vent her spleen—although she’s pretty good at that—but she also encourages citizens to get involved in government and provides them with the tools to do so.
- Chock full of opinion is the conservative Swamp Fox News whose author weighs in the ongoing gun debate. A lot.
- Trommeter Times has some advice for those attempting to balance our federal budget.
- Brad Warthen is talking about whatever pops into his mind, whether it’s Social Media or The Monkees. But loyal followers will be rewarded with some solid insights into South Carolina’s governance (or lack thereof).
