Rachel Marie Woodlee, a Wofford College senior volleyball player from Greer, was selected Saturday for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and will attend the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom as part of the Class of 2013.

She is Wofford’s sixth Rhodes Scholar.

Woodlee and fellow Wofford student Brian Novak McCracken, a senior student-athlete from Anderson, were invited to St. Louis, Mo., this weekend as two of the 12 finalists for the scholarship representing District 12 (South Carolina, Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi and Missouri).

They competed against nearly 200 national finalists from a pool of about 830 applicants from more than 300 American colleges and universities for the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship award in the world.

McCracken is a member of the varsity track and field team.

“I’ve never been so excited about anything in my entire life,” Woodlee said Saturday by telephone after her selection. “This is such a life-changing experience. I looked around that room (at the other finalists) and I knew everyone there was deserving; everyone there will be hugely successful. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Wofford President Benjamin B. Dunlap said of Woodlee and her selection:

“Fighting the world’s fight’ is what the founder of the Rhodes Scholarship said he wanted its recipients to undertake. As a star athlete in volleyball – and before that, in basketball – Rachel knows al about fighting. As someone who has lived and studied in China and other distant lands, she knows a great deal about the world. And, as a Wofford student leader with a perfect academic record, as someone with wit and energy and verve, as a person intensely committed to the well-being of others, she is perfectly equipped to make this world a better place. All of us should rejoice, for I promise you, she will.”

Woodlee is one of 32 students selected for the Rhodes Scholar Class of 2013, who will attend the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. The Rhodes Trust, a British charity established to honor the will and bequest of Cecil J. Rhodes, provides full financial support for the Rhodes Scholars to attend Oxford. The first American Rhodes Scholars entered Oxford in 1904.

Woodlee is majoring in business economics and Chinese and is a graduate of Mauldin High School. She is the daughter of Timothy and Joan Woodlee of Greer. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Woodlee was a four-year varsity started at Mauldin High School and earned 2009 4A All-State honors as well as Region II 4A All-Region. She received the Martin Luther King Award for Excellence in Athletics and was awarded the Maverick Award for Leadership in Volleyball in 2007. She lettered in basketball as well. She was a member of the National Honor Society, was an AP Scholar with Distinction and served as a Junior Marshal in 2007. She was named a Palmetto Fellow in 2008.

Matt Sirmans of Simpsonville is member of the Clemson University Shotgun Club, which recently won its third straight Southeastern Invitational Collegiate Championship at the Jacksonville Skeet and Trap Gun Club in Jacksonville, Fla.

The 15 Clemson shooters overcame 30-mph winds and beat out eight other universities to take the title, outshooting second-place finisher University of Florida 679 targets to 668.

Sirmans, a Senior Mechanical Engineering major, was among 105 shooters competing at the event.

"I'm really proud of our shooters, especially considering that they had to contend with high winds caused by Hurricane Sandy. They spent many hours at the shooting range and it paid off with our top five shooters averaging 23 targets per round of 25," said Rick Willey, shotgun club coach and Clemson University Extension 4-H natural resource specialist.

The team won $12,500 for its MidwayUSA Scholastic Shooting Trust Fund, a percentage of which helps offset the cost of ammunition, entrance fees and traveling expenses. The team will travel to San Antonio in the spring to participate in the national championships. Clemson won national championships in International Skeet, International Trap, American Skeet and American Trap events last season.

The event was sponsored by MidwayUSA and the Scholastic Clay Target Program and hosted by Jacksonville University. The Clemson University Shotgun Club is supported by the School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences.

An Easley man was shot and killed by police early Sunday morning in Greenville after they stopped his assault on another man.

According to WYFF, Greenville police broke up an altercation around 12:45 a.m. on Brown Street.

Police told the television station that Senovio "Novi" Maldonado, 19, of Easley was beating another man with a baseball bat. Maldonado allegedly then charged at police with the bat and the two officers on scene fired at him.

                                                        Maldonado died at the scene.

The assault victim was taken to the hospital for his injures, according to the article.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.

Clemson coach Dabo Sweeney has built a strong college football program in his time at Clemson. And he also has one of the nation's top stadiums to perform in.

Updated (9 p.m. Nov. 18): Clemson's chances of a return trip to the BCS, possibly against a tough SEC team in the Sugar Bowl, rests on Saturday's game versus rival South Carolina.

A win, and the Tigers appear destined to one of five BCS games, despite a No. 11 ranking in this week's newest BCS standings. One ESPN bowl expert says the Tigers will win and play LSU in New Orleans.

But another ESPN expert and CBS Sportsline's Jerry Palm believe the Tigers will lose and will be pitted against Georgia, possibly, in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

An Upstate soldier has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said Sunday that Sgt. Channing Hicks, 24, of Greer, was killed in action.

Hicks along with Spc. Joseph A. Richardson, 23, of Booneville, Ark., died Nov. 16 in Paktika province from injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

Hicks was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Steve Spurrier and South Carolina travel to LSU on Saturday.

Updated (9 p.m. Nov. 18): It's rivalry week, and there is always a lot riding on South Carolina's battle with Clemson.

This year, it could be even more with big-time bowl berths on the line.

A win and the Gamecocks could be heading to Tampa to play in the Outback Bowl. That's where CBS Sports' Jerry Palm says USC is heading to battle Northwestern.

A loss, and the Gamecocks will probably head to Atlanta for the Chick-fil-A Bowl against a non-ACC champion.

ESPN's bowl experts are split on the matter. One says the Gamecocks will win and head to Florida. One believes they will lose and head to Atlanta.

An Upstate middle school student has been suspended and recommended for expulsion after a BB gun was found Monday afternoon on a Greenville County school bus.

According to school officials, a student texted his mother Monday afternoon after he saw what appeared to be a BB gun in possession of another student.

The district contacted the bus driver to pull into Wade Hampton High School's parking log so that a search could be conducted.

The school's resource officer and administrators met the bus and conducted a search and found a BB gun, school officials said.

The Sevier Middle School student in possession of the BB gun has been suspended and recommended for expulsion, school officials said.

Investigations by school personnel and law enforcement are ongoing. Parents with students on the bus are being contacted via our automated calling system, according to the school district.

The SC Attorney General’s Office says former Anderson County Administrator Joey Preston should return more than $1 million he allegedly made by referring customers to former Councilman Ronnie Gene Wilson’s silver investment business.

Last week, Ron Wilson was sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison on mail fraud charges after bilking investors out of $60 million in fraudulent silver investments.

Judge J. Michelle Childs of Greenville imposed sentence after hearing from victims, the government, and Wilson. She also ordered Wilson to pay $57 million in restitution to the 798 victims of the fraud.

The Orangeburg Times and Democrat reports that a complaint was filed against Preston last month.

The complaint alleges that Preston violated the state’s Uniform Securities Act by bringing investors to Wilson and Wilson’s business, Atlantic Bullion & Coin.

Investigators say Wilson operated a Ponzi scheme out of his Easley-based business for at least 11 years.

The Times and Democrat reports that the complaint does not allege that Preston knew Wilson’s business was a con, but that he did not check the investment as required and that he helped bring in investors without being properly registered to do so.

In addition to the return of Ponzi-related funds, the state also seeks to bar Preston from ever doing securities-related business in South Carolina. Preston also faces a fine of $10,000 per violation.

Earlier this year, Preston told investigators that Wilson had told him AB & C’s Silver Investment Accounts were operated as Ponzi schemes. Preston told investigators that Wilson also told him that he and his business did not have enough silver holdings to repay investors.

Preston himself invested in Atlantic Bullion & Coin, he told investigators.

Earlier this month, Preston became county administrator for Bamberg County.

The Gamecocks have 693 registrations (50.11%) and the Tigers have 690 registrations (49.89%). We now have over 1,380 registrations. This may be the closest Donate Life Duel ever, according to Donate Life officials.

Because the Donate Life Duel has an online component, it gives all fans of the Clemson University Tigers and University of South Carolina Gamecocks the opportunity to show their school spirit while saving lives.

The friendly competition between supporters of both schools allows them to help their side win by signing up more organ/eye/tissue donors on the secure online South Carolina Organ and Tissue Donor Registry at DonateLifeSC.org

This annual Donate Life Duel will continue through November 23, 2012 at 11:59 p.m.

Clemson has won the Donate Life Duel three years in a row. More than 5,350 individuals have signed up in the S.C. Organ, Eye, and Tissue Registry through the Donate Life Duel.

In addition to the many current and former South Carolina residents who may be affected, the cyber-security breach at the Department of Revenue has claimed its first victim in the Department of Revenue (DOR).

At a press conference in the State House lobby on Tuesday afternoon Gov. Nikki Haley announced she had accepted the resignation of (DOR) Director Jim Etter effective December 31.

Etter will be replaced by Bill Blume who is presently the Executive Director of the Public Employee Benefit Authority. Etter had been the director since January 2011.

Haley had previously said that she did not expect anyone to lose their job over the hack, but regarding Etter’s resignation she said, ”Jim came to the agreement that we needed a new set of eyes on the Department of Revenue.”

While testifying to the Senate Finance Committee a few days after the breach had been made public, Etter was informed that business information had been compromised. He had not previously been aware that that had been the case.

Haley also announced that the information security firm Mandiant had released its report on the breach.
