UPDATE: Child Killed In Landrum Home Incident Identified

Deputy Coroner Kent Dill identified the 2-year-old child Wednesday afternoon killed in an accident at a Landrum home late Tuesday night. 

Dill said Chandler Jerome Shaver was playing with his 4-year-old sister when a chest of drawers turned over on top of both children in the bedroom of their Laurind Lane home in Landrum. 

Shaver was taken to Greer Memorial emergency room, where he was pronunced dead at 12:28 a.m. Dill said an autopsy revealed the child died of compressional asphyxia from the furniture falling on top of him. 

 

UPDATED 11:10 A.M. - 

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office released some more details Wednesday morning regarding the Tuesday night death of a small child in Landrum. 

Mike Hildebrand of the GCSO confirmed that a 2-year-old child was playing with his 4-year-old sister in a room when a chest of drawers fell on both of them. The brother died, and the sister was treated at the hospital and turned over to DSS custody. 

The mother of both children was home at the time of the incident, Hildebrand said, but the kids were alone in the room. 

"The child was placed in DSS care based on the living conditions in the
home," Hildebrand said.

ORIGINAL REPORT 

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident in Landrum that took the life of a 2-year-old child. 

The GCSO confirmed Wednesday morning that at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to a home at 27 Laurinda Lane in Landrum in reference to a 2-year-old child who was unresponsive. 

Deputies at the scene learned that the child, a boy, was playing with a 4-year-old girl in the bedroom of the home when a piece of furniture fell on top of them. 

The 2-year-old was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he was prounounced dead, and the 4-year-old was treated for her injuries. The 4-year-old girl was later removed from the home and placed into the custody of The Department of Social Services.
