A Greenville County woman died Thursday afternoon while in the custody of Greenville County Sheriff's deputies and EMS, the GCSO reported.
The woman, who was being transported for a mental evaluation, reportedly became combative while on a stretcher in an ambulance. The unidentified woman, who was being transported from 607 Emily Lane in the Moonville community of southern Greenville County, began having problems breathing.
Deputies said they believe the 39-year-old woman died of cardiac arrest.
Because it was an in-custody death, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has responded to conduct an investigation. The GCSO said it also will conduct an internal investigation to make sure all policies and procedures were followed.
Deputies responded to the woman's apartment around 1:38 p.m. regarding service of mental evaluations papers, according to a GCSO press release.
Before deputies responded to the address they contacted EMS and requested assistance to transport the female by ambulance due to her not being able to sit in a patrol vehicle because of a physical condition, the release said.
Once deputies arrived on scene they did make contact with the female and other family members inside her bedroom and she was told why they were there. The female agreed to go with deputies and EMS personnel and was placed onto a stretcher outside of the apartment to be transported to the hospital for the mental evaluation, the release said.
"The female became combative with EMS while on the stretcher and inside the ambulance and began having problems breathing. At this point we believe that the female went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance while enroute to the hospital," the release said.
The woman was pronounced dead at Greenville Memorial Hospital at 3:35 p.m., according to the GCSO.
