About 50 friends and colleagues of Mauldin firefighter Gary Brinkley, Jr., assembled Sunday afternoon to honor the avid runner, who collapsed during the recent Peacock Strides for Babies 5K in Mauldin.
The idea, hatched by City Council member Larry Goodson, was to finish the race that Brinkley failed to after he collapsed from a brain hemorrhage near the intersection of SC 417 and Golden Strip Drive.
"There were fire fighters driving the trucks in front of us and behind the last person so we wouldn't get hit! exclaimed Leah Einhorn, who helped organize the walk/run.
Brinkley remains in the hospital recuperating from the incident.
